Did you know that our St. Rose buses navigated 32,285 safe miles last year!

It was a great day for learning yesterday, both in the classroom and on the bus! Our St. Rose PreK-8th Grade and high school bus riders engaged in a bus safety drill.

It’s a great reminder for our students about some key rules that keep everyone safe on the road so the driver is able to focus on driving.

A few things we covered:
-Stay seated and facing forward while the bus is in motion.
-Keep the bus aisles clear—put bags on your lap or under your seat.
-Use a quiet, indoor voice.
-Wait for the bus driver’s signal before you cross the street.

Safety is always our top priority, and we're so proud of our students for taking this important lesson seriously.

Dear SRS Parents,

I'm writing to you this afternoon to share a special and unexpected moment of learning that took place today. As many of you may have heard, our community recently lost a dedicated volunteer firefighter and EMT from Highland. This morning, as the procession for this individual passed by our school, an extraordinary and deeply moving event unfolded.

Staff and students lined the side of the road to pay their respects. As vehicle after vehicle -- a total of 127, one student counted — slowly drove past, the students stood in complete silence. Although most of them didn't know the individual who passed by they knew he served others and that was reason enough for them to honor him. They showed a level of reverence and respect that was truly remarkable. It was an unplanned and perfect teachable moment, showcasing empathy and the profound value of honoring those who serve our communities.

After the procession, I gathered our middle school students as they finished their lunches to speak with them about what we had just witnessed. We talked about the concept of Legacy, a word we introduced at the beginning of last school year. I asked them if they believed this individual left a legacy, and they instantly confirmed that he did. Students offered powerful examples, noting how he put others before himself by going into burning buildings or helping people in need as an EMT, often disregarding his own well-being to help someone else. I couldn’t think of a better way to pay tribute to a selfless indivdual that was taken from us too early.

As an administrator, I am sometimes so focused on maximizing every moment of classroom time for students, but something inside me knew that we had to seize this moment today. It was a huge learning opportunity for our students, and I am so proud of how they demonstrated an innate understanding of dignity and compassion as they stood along St. Rose Road today. It was a beautiful and humbling sight.

Thank you for raising such thoughtful and empathetic children.

The purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness of the need to protect Earth's natural resources. On Wednesday, the Middle School students celebrated Earth Day at St. Rose Park. Students participated in community service by spreading mulch, taking down temporary walls, wiping down equipment, and cleaning the pavilions. Students then enjoyed playing at the clean park and leaving positive chalk messages for walkers to enjoy. Thank you to Justin Detmer for helping us organize a fun way to help our community.
